Realism-Driven Actions of the US Government Since World War II
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper providing examples of realist actions taken by the US government in its dealings with foreign nations. As a mode of practice, the realist school appears to be unattractive and uncaring at best. However, it has been realism on which much of America's current success has been built, and it is realism that has produced much of the prosperity we now enjoy that enables us to share that prosperity with others while still gaining benefit for ourselves as well. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Filename: Nucold.wps

Cold War Consequences
[ send me this paper ]
The Cold War was a war of ideology that had it's beginnings in the aftermath of World War II and the redistribution of power. The two great powers, the United States and the Soviet Union struggled for a balance of power in a world where even the definitions of peace had changed. The Cold war had the effect of generating an active defense of American capitalism. Private enterprise economy was seen as a viable and stable economic system. Economic freedom and political democracy were commingled in the eyes of the world, much as communism and authoritarian government were. This 5 page paper examines some of the changes wrought by the ending of the Cold War and the changes that might be expected in the future. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
Filename: Coldcons.wps

The Origins Of Totalitarianism
[ send me this paper ]

Filename: Earlcold.wps

The Cold War / Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page piece that discusses the self-fulfilling prophecy of the Cold War, in that the buildup of arms against the perceived threat to borders and national economic stability, created an atmosphere of fear and annihilation. Or did it? The governments eventually moved onto the ground that there were ways to win a nuclear war. Only public outcry, and leaders such as Michel Gorbachev changed the face of the cold war. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
Filename: Coldwarp.wps

What Won The Cold War?

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
[ send me this paper ]
In 7 pages, the author disagrees with the statement 'As a creature of the Cold War, NATO is an institution that has outlived its usefulness and should be disbanded,' and gives reasons for that disagreement. NATO was begun as a Cold War institution, but it will continue to exist as long as there is a necessity for it to do so. NATO is just as useful in the present, as it was in the middle of the twentieth century. It is important for just such instances as the situation is Kosovo where genocide was being committed. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
Filename: PCnato.doc

The Threat of Nuclear War in the Post-Cold War World
[ send me this paper ]
In this 5 page research paper, the writer describes how much more serious the threat of nuclear war has actually become since the end of the Cold War. It is argued that while the START series of treaties (and others) do indeed present themselves as positive steps towards world peace, securing world safety from the possible threat of nuclear proliferation in countries like Iraq is now an all-important concern. In sum, this paper makes the point that the nuclear threat hasn't been erased-- It has simply changed its form. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

A Comparison Of The Political Approaches Of The League Of Nations And The United Nations
[ send me this paper ]
The success of the United Nations is based on a conglomeration of many political ideologies and precepts. The unshakable liberalism of democratic values, in concert with the idealistic belief in cooperative security brought Woodrow Wilson to the fore of international politics and was the foundation for the League of Nations. The time was not right, there was too many domestic problems in the world for the League to have the power it needed to handle international conflicts. After World War II, with the change in outlook of domestic policy in the United States and in the Soviet Union, in combination with the neorealist philosophy based on balance of power, the time was right for the establishment of an organization based on cooperative security and the United Nations was founded. This 7 page paper examines the forces that brought the League of Nations into being, explores the reasons it was not able to maintain power and looks at the processes used to conceive the United Nations as the force it is today. This is followed by a discussion of the Catholic Church in Colombia beginning with a brief explanation of the Medellin Conference in the 1960s at which time a new theology was adopted in Latin America. The new Liberation Theology, adopted at that time, promotes a doctrine in opposition to the Catholic Church and it has been continually denounced by the Pope. State Sovereignty, Self-Determination, & The United Nations
[ send me this paper ]
A 28 page comprehensive research paper on self-determination and the world's role in promoting independence. The writer examines Woodrow Wilson's original doctrine and the United Nations mandates that followed. State sovereignty is looked at both from an historical perspective and with relevance to the role of human rights today. Numerous examples and international case law are provided and it is ultimately concluded that unless a distinction between self-determination and secession is made and understood, the right of self-determination will either drag the world body politic into violence and chaos, or the principle itself will have to be considered one that has outlived its usefulness and could undermine the potential for democratic development. Conflict Resolution / State vs. Non-State Societies
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper that discusses the anthropological beginnings of the nation-state, and how states and non-states deal with social conflict. Anthropologists characterize all societies, whether states or non-states, as resolving conflict through what they call the 'universality of law.' This compelling allegory was designed by Plato as the basis for his argument that society should be ruled by the king-philosopher, the man who had the knowledge to rule wisely based on his knowledge of philosophy. In Between Past and Future, Arendt explores the ramifications of what Plato says happened once the enlightened man reenters the cave, which is, of course, ordinary human society. No additional sources cited.

The Present & Future Global Oil Market
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing the current and future global market share of the oil industry. All the industrialized nations that so heavily had depended on OPEC-produced oil had instituted wide-ranging conservation measures with the crisis of 1973-1974, and most of them experienced recession due in large part to the stranglehold OPEC had on their economies in the late 1970s and the 1980s.
